Having now finished my third year at the University of Cincinnati, I have to say that this was one of the most difficult years of my life. Firstly, I dealt with several health and family problems that negatively affected my academic and physical well being. This being paired with a new co-op job and the hardest semester of school to date made for a very trying time.
However, more important than all of the difficulties that I've recently experienced, is what I've learned and how I can apply those ideas going forward. I feel stronger and more capable now than I ever have before. I was less than exited by my academic performance last year and so I am striving to do better this semester (with great success). I am working at Kellogg's Snack Foods division, where I've been given a great deal of responsibility and I fit in with the culture very well. I've had opportunities through my job to volunteer at local food banks, gain leadership experience, manage people, and develop technical skills.
In the past year I've had the opportunity to go on a few family vacations to experience different parts of the US of A. On our family goal to visit all fifty states, we were able to add Mississippi, Alabama, Louisiana, and Arkansas. In this trip we spent a decent amount of time in New Orleans, and I must say that N.O is nothing like any other city I've seen. The exposure to southern (and Creole) culture was exciting and fascinating. I'm so thankful that I had the opportunity to better my understanding of different cultures and regions within my own country. I look forward to one day traveling to Europe and experience their many different ways of life. I think that its an important part of being a balanced and educated human being, which is something that I strive to be.
I've started working out with some of my friends each morning before our classes, and after a few months of this new routine, I am now in the best shape of my life. It is very satisfying for me to exercise my abilities both mentally and physically and finally get to see those results. Often it feels fruitless to work towards something for years with little result, but now I feel as if I am finally realizing some of the gains that I've striven towards for so long.
One of the most exciting developments this past year comes in the form of meeting with my advisers and creating a plan to graduate with my Mechanical Engineering degree and my MBA both by Spring of 2018. This means that I will have attained my formal educational goals by 2018, and I believe I will be set up for success in my career and for the rest of my life.
All in all, I'm happy with my personal progress. That said, I'm more hungry for growth and learning than I ever have been in my life, and I'm constantly looking for new ways to better myself in any facet I can.
