LeaderShape 2013
I had the wonderful opportunity in December of 2013 to attend a LeaderShape retreat. At LeaderShape many different topics were discussed, reflected upon, and investigated thoroughly. First and foremost at LeaderShape, every participant needed to define what leadership is to them as an individual.
My definition of leadership is very simple. I believe that a leader is someone who makes decisions for a group, and takes responsibility for those decisions. Though I always believed this, LeaderShape really allowed me to solidify my thoughts through reflection and writing exercises. To me, that epitomizes the benefit of LeaderShape. What happens at LeaderShape isn't groundbreaking or amazing (okay it was a couple times) but really what matters is what I was able to take away from LeaderShape and implement in my life and my future.
One of the biggest things that I get to take away from LeaderShape is the importance of Leading with Integrity. Without integrity, a leader cannot truly exist as someone who should be followed. Leading with Integrity has become a very important part of my life, and I am appreciative to have gained it from LeaderShape. Not only does Leading with Integrity allow me to become a better and more effective leader, but it also is part of a personal growth experience to become a better person.
Another amazing thing that I am able to take away from Leadershape is a network of peope. The people in my small-group (called a Family Cluster) are people who I will be friends with for the rest of my life. All of the people on LeaderShape brought something unique to the table and allowed me to learn about them and their different backgrounds. I am so thankful to have people who are true friends to me, but are also going to be future leaders in our world.
Because this was my first Honors Experience, I am beyond excited about getting more involved and completing more experiences regarding leadership themes. I feel that I now have the tools to be an effective leader in my life and in my community. My next step as an Honors student, and as a LeaderShape graduate, is to get involved in ROAR Tour Guides' Advanced Leadership Development Program (ALDP). This program is a pre-approved Honors Experience, and will hopefully be the next step in my journey to becoming a leader in my field, my family, and my community.
Below are two artifacts that I have taken with me from LeaderShape. The first explains my vision for how I would like to impact the world in which we live. The second helps to explain what steps I will take to accomplish this vision and make it a reality.
